Synopsis
Set on the White Deer Plain in Shaanxi, the novel follows generations of the Bai and Lu families through the upheavals from the late Qing dynasty to the early years of the People's Republic. Family rivalries, rural order, political turmoil, and the rise and decline of traditional culture converge in a sweeping social and spiritual portrait. The novel received the fourth Mao Dun Literature Prize.
