Synopsis

Set against China's social transformation from the mid-1970s to the mid-1980s, Ordinary World follows the lives of brothers Sun Shaoan and Sun Shaoping and the people around them. Across three volumes, the novel portrays the difficult choices ordinary people face in work, love, hardship, and aspiration, interweaving individual struggle with sweeping changes in urban and rural life. It received the third Mao Dun Literature Prize in 1991.
